Pagos de los Abuelos was founded by Nacho Álvarez Losada, an oenologist and sommelier recognized as “Oenologist Revelation” in 2016 by Robert Parker, with the first vintage released in 2018 under the Bierzo Denomination of Origin. The name means “The Grandparents’ Vineyards,” a tribute to the ancestral vines — some planted between 1888 and 1910 — that form the soul of the project. The estate consists of 35 plots totaling 6 hectares distributed across three areas, and it is the only winery in Castilla y León certified as Heroic Viticulture, reflecting the extreme steepness and difficulty of farming these mountainous terraces. Wine & Spirits Magazine included Pagos de los Abuelos in its top 100 wineries in the world — and the only one in Bierzo.
